My deepest sympathies to Joan, Nancy, Rob, Chauntelle and family. Tom was such a great neighbour and friend of our family over the years. You could always count on him to wave as you passed by his place. I will mostly remember him for the years at Zehrs and how he took care of the customers, many times he’d give groceries to someone who couldn’t pay and tell them to pay when they could. He pushed me to be more outgoing with customers. I remember how he loved the outdoors, going out on the boat at sunset and many other memories of him and Joan. He will be greatly missed.

Hi Aunt Joan,
Since losing Dad in April, I took solace in Uncle Tom because he sounded so much like Dad — the same inflections in his voice, the same caring way he spoke, familiar expressions and laugh. A real ‘soft shit,’ just like Dad. To be honest, it was hard to talk to Uncle Tom after Dad’s death because he reminded me of him. They both had such a genuine and caring way. Gentlemen with a twinkle in their eyes and mischievous smiles on their faces. The last time I saw Uncle Tom was when you two visited Mom and Dad in Nova Scotia. Mom and Dad were busy in the kitchen, preparing the supper’s feast, so it was just you, me, and Uncle Tom, sitting in the living room. I was enjoying myself because it was an opportunity for you and Uncle Tom to get to know me as an adult — I hadn’t seen you in years because I was always working and hadn’t been able to attend the Bechard family reunions. I was on the long couch and Uncle Tom was sitting on the little couch to my left. I was recounting some event that had happened to me. (For the life of me, I can’t remember what.) Well, whatever it was, it struck Uncle Tom’s funny bone and he began to laugh. And laugh. And laugh. AND LAUGH! Overcome with the giggles, he had to leave the room. He laughed so hard, he was crying. I think he even got the hiccups. It was the cutest thing. From then on, every time he looked at me, he began to laugh again. Later that evening, you took me aside and thanked me, saying you hadn’t seen him laugh like that in probably ten years. You made me feel so good about myself. I know from personal experience, you can’t put a price tag on a good laugh. They are rare and precious. I’m so, so, so happy I gave that gift to Uncle Tom, and you, and me. My love to you, Nancy, Robbie, and Chantelle.

Thank you to everyone for all of your support. Dad's family and community were so important to him. He loved to bring a sparkle of fun to every situation, so if you remember a joke he told (if it is appropriate enough to put in print ;) ), or a way he brought laughter to a situation, please share. He would love us all to be having a drink, watching a sunset, and sharing good times in his memory.
