Obituary of Loretta Marie Damphousse
DAMPHOUSSE, LORETTA (Nee Couture) - Born January 11,1927 in Pain Court, Ontario.
Loretta laid down her knitting needles at Tilbury Manor Nursing Home on July 26, 2021 at the age of 94. In 1947, Loretta married her husband Ed Damphousse (2008) and relocated to their farm near Tilbury. They created a life together planting and harvesting different crops. Loretta knew what a hard day’s work meant. She picked over 100 bushels of tomatoes per day and was the best lady for topping beets Ed had. Her nickname was “Barney” to Ed because he said she worked like a horse. Welcoming Jeannette (Robert Morais, July 22, 2021) and Maurice “Pete” (Gisele) into their lives meant extra help with tasks at hand. Grandchildren complemented the family with the arrival of Lisa (Jaret) and Shawn (Renee). Loretta (aka Meme) ensured they learnt how to harvest crops, grow a garden, can produce and pluck chickens. Great-grandchildren completed the family with the arrival of Ty, Taisha and Brayden.
Family gatherings made Loretta smile as she served the family and relatives her “chicken and poutines”. The special serving bowl was always empty! Extra company at the table meant “adding a little more to the pot” for Loretta. It was no fault of hers if you left the house hungry. Saturday evenings was one of Loretta’s favorite days as Ed always took her out to dance the night away. Cold winter nights were a great opportunity to play Euchre and “Lou” with family and friends. Quarter betting was allowed and winning the pot from the night’s games was something to brag about for months to come. Loretta was an accomplished knitter. She kept her knitting going right until a few weeks before her passing. She was known for helping others with their knitting challenges. Knitting one pneumonia vest per day for Canadian Food for Children wasn’t uncommon for Loretta. Knitting was her way to show her love. Loretta was also very social. She loved selling their famous sweet corn, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers at the roadside stand. Loretta loved it when family and friends stopped by for a garage visit. You were guaranteed to be offered a coffee or Pepsi (her favorite drinks). After suffering a stroke in 2018, Loretta moved to Tilbury Manor Nursing Home. There she enjoyed playing weekly bingo games. She was also content to see her granddaughter Lisa was there, working. She appreciated the company of the staff members who assisted with her daily care. Their caring hearts and hands helped her live three extra years. Loretta and family thank you so very much! Loretta is survived by one sister, Dorothy Sauve (Rene). Predeceased by her siblings Adelard Couture (Aldea), Herman Couture (Madelaine), Arsene Couture (Reta), Ernest Couture (Elmire), Florence Ouellette (Hector), Dora Couture (Harvey), Gerard Couture (Godelieve) and Annette Howe (Don). Predeceased by Ed’s brothers and sisters; Antoine Damphousse, Donat Damphousse, Raymond Damphousse (surviving wife Doreen), Evelyn Duplessie (John), Evilda Duquette (Alfred) and Rose Reaume (Noah).
