Al and family, I am so sorry (and shocked) to hear of Mavis passing. I know we all go at some point but Mavis was so full of life, always smiling, and it just seemed that she’d be here for always. Such a fun, funny, kind, tough woman - I’ll definitely raise a glass and remember her fondly! I hope your memories and time with Mavis will bring you comfort and warmth. Rest In Peace dear friend.

I’m so sorry Al, Kelly and Samantha to hear of your best friend and Mom’s passing. What a difficult time this must be for you all right now. I must say my memories of Mavis are all fun. No matter what she was doing, she always played to win. I loved that competitive spirit about her. I think about Waddies, golf, her love of travel and family. She will be missed by many. My sincerest condolences to your family.

I am so sad to hear of Mavis’s passing. Back in 1971 we had a lot of great times together for 4 years. Went to the 1972 Canada vs Russia hockey game in Montreal. We stayed at her relatives house. It was both of our first flights on an airplane. We had lost contact with each other over the years until she asked to be a friend on Facebook. Please Rest In Peace Mavis! I am sure your Mom and Dad and Took will be happy reuniting with you. Rob

I knew Mavis long before she met Al and became a Shanks. She was our Family’s favorite babysitter looking after our two boys (Carl and Jon) then our daughter (Suzy). She was also a family friend and always a fun person to be around. Can’t remember the number of times she was dumped in our pool fully clothed, and the times she did the same to our family members and neighbors.
Lost track of her for a few years then discovered she was living in what I seem to remember may have been the Tilbury area. Working in London for a few days I called the the now Mavis Shanks and was promptly invited to visit their apartment. While there they insisted that I went to look at the house they were building on the lake. A couple of years later I was driving down the road where I seem to remember the house was going to be build. Thought I had the house, drove up, and rather embarrassed rang the doorbell thinking for sure it was the wrong house. Then I here, “Butlin.... how the #&&@&$ you doing?” I knew I had the right place. Invited into the new house. Went with Mavis to Al’s office in Town where she told Al they had a dinner guest. Had a wonderful evening with them.
Mavis was a wonderful person. My condolences go to Al, and to their family.
Terry Butlin.

About five years ago, I once again had the pleasure of playing 18 holes with Mavis and Al. Al birdied the third hole and the world stopped while Mavis poured out the four birdie shots on the fourth tee. What a great tradition and one which I immediately stole from them (with Mavis's permission) and maintain to this day. Never will another birdie go by without a toast to Mavis!

I am lost for words! How do I describe Mavis! Mavis was Mavis! A force to be reckoned with. Yes, loved to be in control, but dam she was good at everything she did, so it was hard to argue her ability to be the "boss". In our younger years she was Thelma to my Louise. The shinanigans we were involved in, during our day trips to wineries and shopping or our vacas with the guys, will be great memories for years.
The last few years she fought so hard to stay, she loved her career as a wife, mother and Nana, and was so good at it. The love for her family was immeasurable. Al, Sam, Kelly and families, Mavis will be in many hearts for many years, and when people speak of her they will smile. Know that my heart breaks for all of you, but know she will walk beside you always
Love to you all,
Susan Goodreau
